Comcast SportsNet Chicago to rebrand as ‘NBC Sports Chicago’

NBC Sports Chicago

For the fifth time since it signed on 35 years ago, Chicago’s regional sports network is getting a new name.

On October 2, Comcast SportsNet Chicago will be rebranded as “NBC Sports Chicago.” New look, new logo, same network.

The move, announced Wednesday and first reported by Chicago Tribune sports writer Phil Rosenthal, will bring CSN Chicago in line with the eight other regional sports networks across the country in the NBC Sports Group.

“We’re excited to complete the brand evolution of our remaining RSNs, which will now include the iconic NBC Sports name on all of our networks,” David Preschlack, president of NBC Sports Regional Networks, said in a statement. “This development is a reaffirmation of our continued commitment to provide the best, most compelling local sports coverage to our fans across the country.”

Some viewers may still recall the launch of SportsVision, Chicago’s original subscription sports television service, in 1982. Its branding evolved over the years:

  • SportsVision (1982-1990); became a cable network in 1984
  • SportsChannel Chicago (1990-1998)
  • Fox Sports Chicago (1998-2004); known as Fox Sports Net Chicago starting in 2000
  • Comcast SportsNet Chicago (2004-present); shortened to CSN Chicago in 2016

After the rechristening to NBC Sports Chicago, Bill Bridgen, group leader of NBC Sports Regional Networks, will continue to oversee operations here. Bridgen stepped in on an interim basis last May following the departure of Phil Bedella after six years as vice president and general manager.

CSN Chicago is a partnership between the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and the NBC Sports Group.
