Tribune buys Splash from Sun-Times



Splash, the glossy lifestyle and fashion supplement published by the parent company of the Sun-Times, has been picked up by Tribune Publishing.

The sale was completed over the weekend and confirmed Monday by Dana Meyer, a spokeswoman for Tribune Publishing. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The acquisition, effective immediately, puts the magazine back under the control of Michael Ferro, who launched Splash in 2012 shortly after he became chairman of Wrapports LLC, owner of the Sun-Times. Ferro relinquished that role earlier this year when he took over as chairman of Tribune Publishing.

Splash currently is distributed in Sunday editions of the Sun-Times and in news boxes. It is not known whether the magazine now will be distributed in the Chicago Tribune.

Susanna Homan, who resigned as publisher and general manager of Splash last month to become editor-in-chief and publisher of Chicago magazine, announced the acquisition to her staff Monday. Homan will double as editor and publisher of Splash, also effective immediately.

Both Splash and Chicago magazine are now under Chicago Tribune Media Group ownership.

In a statement released by Wrapports spokesman Glenn Harston, the company also confirmed the agreement to sell Splash: “Susanna Homan was the only editor of Splash in its short history. With her resignation to become Chicago magazine’s editor and publisher, the Wrapports board decided it would rather focus on its core newspaper asset, the Chicago Sun-Times, and digital properties,” the statement said.

All 12 current employees of Splash are expected to continue with the magazine under its new ownership arrangement, sources said.
