How did the Chicago Tribune manage to get the final score and game story from a triple-overtime Blackhawks victory at 1:17 a.m. Wednesday into the final home-delivery edition of this morning’s paper?

Team work.

“Great work by night crew here at the Tower and at Freedom Center,” Joe Knowles, associate managing editor of sports, said in a text message. “Must be some Blackhawks fans on our press and distribution crews.”

Immediately after the second overtime ended, night sports editor Mike Kates drove home to Western Springs and arrived in time to log in and put finishing touches on the front page, Knowles said. He also credited editors Chris Boghossian and Liz Fitzgerald, who worked late into the night.

They weren’t the only ones still up: Nearly 250,000 households were tuned in to Comcast SportsNet from 1 to 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when the Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators in Game 4 of Stanley Cup Playoffs at the United Center.
