Former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo has signed an exclusive agreement to appear as lead football insider on Tribune Broadcasting sports/talk WGWG LP 87.7.

Starting this week, Angelo will join midday hosts David Kaplan and David Haugh at 10:25 a.m. every Wednesday on The Game 87.7 FM.

“There’s a lot of good football insiders, but there’s nobody like a former GM when it comes to having great intel on the process, the free agency and the draft,” Kaplan said. “He can provide a perspective that no one else in Chicago can match.”

Angelo was general manager of the Bears from 2001 to 2012 after serving 14 years as director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Calling him “nothing but class,” Kaplan said of Angelo: “He’s never going to fire on the Bears whether he’s pissed that he got fired or not. [Bears GM Phil] Emery’s been there a couple of years, and now he figures he can analyze football and have some fun with it.”

As the man who acquired quarterback Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos in 2009, Angelo has been critical lately, writing on thesidelineview.com: “[Cutler] has all the physical tools, but inconsistent in the clutch. Mostly due to a lack of poise. He’s not comfortable reading defenses and consequently locks onto a favorite or pre-determined target that may or may not be the right choice. The less he’s asked to see, the better he is. A better half-field general than a full-field one.’’

Angelo joins a roster of expert analysts on the fledgling sports/talk station that includes Todd Hollandsworth on baseball, Eddie Olczyk on hockey and K.C. Johnson on basketball. Terms of Angelo's deal were not disclosed.

The Game debuted Feb. 17 as the FM counterpart of Tribune’s news/talk WGN AM 720, under a local marketing agreement with Venture Technologies Group, which owns the low-power station’s license.
