Jarrett Payton, the sportscaster son of the late Chicago Bears legend Walter Payton, is adding nightly television duties to his work with Tribune Media.

Starting in early June, Payton will join the sports department of WGN-Channel 9 and host a live sports talk show Sundays through Thursdays on cable channel CLTV. He’ll continue as host of “The Beat,” the weekend sports talk show on news/talk WGN AM 720.

“After a career in football, Jarrett has transitioned into a radio and television personality,” Jennifer Lyons, news director of WGN and CLTV, said in announcing the hire Friday. “And as Chicago’s Very Own local sports station, Jarrett’s knowledge and enthusiasm for sports will be the perfect addition to our sports department.”

Payton, 34, grew up in the northwest suburbs and played for the University of Miami, where he was named MVP of the 2004 Orange Bowl. His pro football career included a season with the NFL Tennessee Titans and stints with NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League. In 2010 he retired from the Chicago Slaughter of the Indoor Football League.

Last year Payton joined Tribune Media as afternoon co-host of The Game, the short-lived FM sports/talk station. When that venture folded, he shifted to hosting weekends on WGN Radio and podcasting on WGNplus.com.

Payton’s sister, Brittney, also appears on WGN and CLTV as co-host of “Chicago’s Best,” the weekly food show. She’s been with the program since its inception in 2010.

No title or time period for the CLTV sports show has been announced.
