They\u2019re named for Studs Terkel, the late author and broadcaster who was the group\u2019s guiding spirit.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The five winners, announced Monday, are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lolly Bowean,<\/strong> Chicago Tribune general assignment reporter who focuses on urban affairs, youth culture, housing, and minority communities and relations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sarah Karp,<\/strong> senior investigator at the Better Government Association and former reporter for Catalyst Chicago, the Chicago Reporter and the Daily Southtown. Karp\u2019s stories led directly to the indictment of former Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett for her role in a $23 million bribery scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Richard Steele,<\/strong> veteran Chicago broadcaster who recently retired after 27 years as host at Chicago Public Media WBEZ FM 91.5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cecilia Vaisman,<\/strong> late journalist and multimedia producer for NPR who taught at Northwestern University\u2019s Medill School of Journalism, including audio documentary and bilingual reporting classes. Vaisman, who died last September, is the first Terkel Award recipient to be named posthumously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Winner of the 2016 Studs Terkel Uplifting Voices Award (presented to a supporter of innovative journalism, issues reporting, and storytelling to lift up community voices) is <strong>Aurie Pennick,<\/strong> executive director and treasurer of the Field Foundation of Illinois. A crusading attorney and philanthropist, she also directed Chicago\u2019s first battered women\u2019s shelter and worked as a leader in the fair housing movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_9826\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9826\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-9826\" alt=\"Studs Terkel\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-150x150.jpg 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-57x57.jpg 57w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-72x72.jpg 72w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-114x114.jpg 114w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Studs-Terkel-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Studs Terkel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cStuds would have loved this group,\u201d Susy Schultz, president of Public Narrative, said in a statement. \u201cThese five winners have added in special ways to the discussion of such important issues as race, housing, education, culture and heritage. All have truly enhanced Chicago storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also show why it is crucial to support journalism in a city such as this, particularly in these pivotal times. Good, strong journalism is a foundation of democracy.
