The Chicago Headline Club honored veteran reporter Maureen O’Donnell on Friday night for her extraordinary skill and sensitivity in obituary writing for the Sun-Times.

Print, broadcast and digital colleagues at the 38th annual Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism saluted O’Donnell on receiving the 2015 Anne Keegan Award, the group’s singular honor. Judges cited O’Donnell for her “gifts of inquisitiveness and eye for the perfect anecdote” in her carefully researched and gracefully written obituaries.

Named for the late Chicago Tribune columnist, the Keegan Award was established in 2012 to recognize journalists “who tell stories of ordinary people in extraordinarily well-reported and well-written prose.”

Recipients of the Headline Club’s Watchdog Award for Excellence in Public Interest Reporting were Sun-Times reporters Tim Novak, Chris Fusco and Carol Marin for their series that led to a conviction in the 2004 death of 21-year-old David Koschman. Their investigation culminated in a guilty plea by a nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to news anchor Felicia Middlebrooks of CBS Radio WBBM AM 780 and political editor Greg Hinz of Crain’s Chicago Business.

Peter Lisagor Awards, named for the late Chicago Daily News Washington bureau chief, were presented in more than 100 categories at the event.
