{"id":6387,"date":"2015-01-16T16:00:04","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T22:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertfeder.com\/?p=6387"},"modified":"2015-01-16T16:04:14","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T22:04:14","slug":"reader-staffers-join-newspaper-guild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2015\/01\/16\/reader-staffers-join-newspaper-guild\/","title":{"rendered":"Reader staffers join Newspaper Guild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader.png\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2015\/01\/16\/reader-staffers-join-newspaper-guild\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6388\" alt=\"Reader\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader.png\" width=\"636\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader.png 636w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader-300x191.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader-150x95.png 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader-400x255.png 400w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Reader-200x127.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><\/a>Editorial employees of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagoreader.com\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Reader<\/a> voted unanimously Friday to join the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagonewsguild.org \" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Newspaper Guild<\/a> and approve the union as their collective bargaining representative.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-0 vote paves the way for writers and other staffers to negotiate their first contract in the 44-year history of the free alternative weekly.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just the beginning but it is a strong and resounding one that I believe will result in very positive outcomes in the future,\u201d David Pollard, president of the Chicago Newspaper Guild, wrote in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagonewsguild.org\/uncategorized\/welcome-members-of-the-reader\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement <\/a>posted on the union\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The Guild long has represented editorial employees of the<a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\" target=\"_blank\"> Sun-Times,<\/a> also owned\u00a0by the Reader\u2019s parent company, Wrapports LLC. Asked to comment on the vote Friday, Wrapports CEO Timothy Knight said in a statement: \"We appreciate that staff exercised their right to vote and acknowledge the decision.\"<\/p>\n<p>Here is the text of Pollard\u2019s message to Reader employees:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welcome members of the Reader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>From Chicago Newspaper Guild President Dave Pollard:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I first would like to say thank you all for taking the first step toward becoming a part of Chicago Newspaper Guild.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Your unanimous vote toward being recognized under the Guild shows your solidarity toward making positive changes in your workplace and creating a strong unified voice in the workplace.
