{"id":6200,"date":"2015-01-04T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertfeder.com\/?p=6200"},"modified":"2015-01-04T12:25:12","modified_gmt":"2015-01-04T18:25:12","slug":"news-flash-tribune-restores-ap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2015\/01\/04\/news-flash-tribune-restores-ap\/","title":{"rendered":"News flash: Tribune restores AP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower.jpg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2015\/01\/04\/news-flash-tribune-restores-ap\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6202\" alt=\"Tribune Tower\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower.jpg 720w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower-300x199.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower-150x99.jpg 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower-400x265.jpg 400w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tribune-Tower-200x132.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/a>After getting along for two years without the global news services of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ap.org\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press,<\/a> the Chicago Tribune and six other<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribpub.com\" target=\"_blank\"> Tribune Publishing <\/a>newspapers are back in the fold of the 169-year-old newsgathering organization.<\/p>\n<p>Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Matthew Hutchison, senior vice president for corporate communications of Tribune Publishing, confirmed a report Friday by <a href=\"http:\/\/jimromenesko.com\/2015\/01\/02\/tribune-newspapers-are-using-the-ap-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Romenesko<\/a> that Tribune Newspapers began using the AP again as of New Year\u2019s Day.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6201\" alt=\"AP\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP-300x276.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP-300x276.png 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP-150x138.png 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP-200x184.png 200w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/AP.png 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\"The AP delivers premium content that our readers across all platforms expect,\u201d Hutchison said in a statement. \u201cWe made our recent news service choice based on a number of key criteria, including: meeting our readers' content expectations, achieving the balance of cost and value, and a desire to secure one primary news service for all Tribune Publishing business units.\"<\/p>\n<p>In a cost-cutting move first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeout.com\/chicago\/tv\/wire-cutters-tribune-co-newspapers-dropping-ap\" target=\"_blank\">reported here<\/a> in December 2012, seven Tribune newspapers dropped membership in the AP cooperative and opted instead to carry Reuters America, a less expensive service owned by Thomson Reuters. Along with the Chicago Tribune, papers involved were the Baltimore Sun, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Hartford Courant, Morning Call of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia. The Los Angeles Times never dropped its AP membership.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as last July, Chicago Tribune editor Gerry Kern defended the switch to Reuters as an acceptable substitute, telling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/mediawire\/259621\/eighteen-months-after-dropping-ap-tribune-happy-with-reuters\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poynter.org<\/a> that at \u201ca price that has saved us significant amount of money,\u201d the Tribune and others were getting \u201cmore than adequate\u201d content from Reuters and could devote more resources to local investigations, arts and sports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After getting along for two years without the global news services of the Associated Press, the Chicago Tribune and six other Tribune Publishing newspapers are back in the fold of the 169-year-old newsgathering organization.
