{"id":3642,"date":"2014-06-05T13:00:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertfeder.com\/?p=3642"},"modified":"2014-06-05T15:54:51","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T20:54:51","slug":"radio-hall-of-fame-induction-moving-to-l-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2014\/06\/05\/radio-hall-of-fame-induction-moving-to-l-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony moving to L.A."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-3j7fjzJvnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Two broadcasters with Chicago connections \u2014 Dick Orkin of \u201cChickenman\u201d fame and Ira Glass of \u201cThis American Life\u201d \u2014 will be among this year\u2019s honorees in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiohof.org\" target=\"_blank\">National Radio Hall of Fame.<\/a> But their induction won\u2019t be in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The 2014 induction ceremony will be held Nov. 9 in Los Angeles, marking its first time outside of Chicago since it began in 1992. The shrine to radio\u2019s great personalities and programs is housed at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museum.tv\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Broadcast Communications<\/a> at 360 North State Street.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3649\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2014\/06\/05\/radio-hall-of-fame-induction-moving-to-l-a\/\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3649\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3649\" alt=\"Dick Orkin\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-150x150.jpg 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-57x57.jpg 57w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-72x72.jpg 72w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-114x114.jpg 114w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Dick-Orkin-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/a> Dick Orkin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe National Radio Hall of Fame is taking the show on the road this year,\u201d Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the museum, said in a statement Thursday. \u201cThere\u00a0are many Radio Hall of Famers living in southern California and several 2014 inductees, so it seems like a great time to try something different, and it will\u00a0be good to do the show live once again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The black-tie event will be hosted by Delilah, the syndicated radio personality, and carried live in a two-hour broadcast produced and distributed by Premiere Networks. We\u2019re not making any long-term commitments, and this doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s never going to be another event here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added DuMont: \u201cThe Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, but they have their [induction] ceremony in New York. We\u2019re excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are the 2014 inductees, chosen by the Radio Hall of Fame steering committee:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dick Orkin,<\/strong> the creative genius behind \u201cChickenman\u201d and other radio serials at Chicago\u2019s WCFL in the 1960s and \u201970s, who went on to establish Dick Orkin\u2019s Radio Ranch, a leading advertising production company, in California.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThis American Life,\u201d<\/strong> the groundbreaking public radio documentary series, created at Chicago Public Media WBEZ FM 91.5. Ira Glass continues as host and executive producer of the program, now based in New York.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barry Farber,<\/strong> veteran New York talk show host, now heard on CRN Digital Talk Radio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jon Miller,<\/strong> National Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster and voice of the San Francisco Giants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Charlie Brown and Irv Harrigan,<\/strong> (a.k.a. Jack Woods and\u00a0Paul Menard), radio duo in Dallas, Cleveland, Houston and San Diego, who pioneered a new form of syndication to more than 40 affiliates across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Agnes Moorehead<\/strong> (posthumous), famed radio actress and original ensemble member of Orson Welles\u2019s The Mercury Theatre on the Air. She later became known for her TV sitcom role as Endora on \u201cBewitched.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stanley E. Hubbard<\/strong> (posthumous), radio pioneer and visionary, and patriarch of Minneapolis-based Hubbard Broadcasting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the seven honorees, this year\u2019s event also will salute women previously inducted in the Radio Hall of Fame: actors Eve Arden, Virginia Payne, Shirley Bell, Virginia Clark and Julie Stevens; comedians Gracie Allen and Jane Ace; writers\/creators\/stars Marian Jordan and Gertrude Berg; producer Lynne \u201cAngel\u201d Harvey; executive Cathy Hughes; journalists Ann Compton and Susan Stamberg; interviewer Terry Gross; singer Kate Smith; and hosts Wendy Williams, Yvonne Daniels, Terri Hemmert and Marian McPartland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two broadcasters with Chicago connections \u2014 Dick Orkin of \u201cChickenman\u201d fame and Ira Glass of \u201cThis American Life\u201d \u2014 will be among this year\u2019s honorees in the National Radio Hall of Fame.
