<\/a> Brandis Friedman<\/p><\/div>\n

Four prominent Chicago journalists have been named recipients of the 2021 Studs Terkel Community Media Awards<\/a> by the nonprofit Public Narrative.<\/p>\n

Winners announced online Tuesday include: Brandis Friedman,<\/strong> co-anchor and correspondent for \u201cChicago Tonight\u201d on Window to the World Communications WTTW-Channel 11; Karen Hawkins,<\/strong> co-editor in chief of the Chicago Reader and founder of feminist media company Rebellious Magazine for Women; Maureen O\u2019Donnell,<\/strong> reporter and obituary writer for the Sun-Times; and Michael Puente,<\/strong> reporter for Chicago Public Media WBEZ 91.5-FM.<\/p>\n

Named for the late Chicago author and broadcaster, the prestigious awards recognize excellence in coverage of Chicago\u2019s diverse communities and demonstrate authentic storytelling in the spirit of Terkel\u2019s gift for elevating people\u2019s voices above power.<\/p>\n

The 26th annual awards ceremony will take place online May 13 \u2014 three days before what would have been Terkel\u2019s 109th birthday.\u00a0 (Here is the link to register.<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Two additional honorees were announced for related awards:<\/p>\n

Tonika Lewis Johnson,<\/strong> activist artist whose film \u201cThe Folded Map Project\u201d <\/a>dramatized institutional racism and segregation in Chicago\u2019s neighborhoods, will receive the 2021 Uplifting Voices Award. The citation honors an individual \u2013 journalist or otherwise \u2013 who lifts the voices of people in Chicago communities.<\/p>\n

Jamie Kalven,<\/strong> founder of the Chicago-based Invisible Institute and the independent investigative journalist whose reporting first brought the police shooting of Laquan McDonald to public attention, will receive the 2021 Ripple Effect Award, which recognizes a journalist anywhere in the U.S. whose work has had an impact in Chicago and beyond.<\/p>\n

Kalven announced last month he\u2019s stepping down<\/a> as executive director of the nonprofit journalism production company he launched in 2014.<\/p>\n
