Terrance Noland, a former editor at Men’s Journal, Esquire and SmartMoney, has been named executive editor of Chicago magazine.

His appointment, effective April 14, was announced Thursday by editor in chief Beth Fenner.

As No. 2 editor at the Tribune Co.-owned monthly, Noland succeeds Cassie Walker Burke, a 12-year veteran who resigned last month to join Crain’s Chicago Business as an assistant managing editor.

“I’m thrilled that Terry has agreed to join our staff,” Fenner said. “His amazing resume speaks for itself: Executive editor at Men’s Journal, articles editor at Esquire, articles editor at SmartMoney. And we already know him well, given that he has written two terrific features for Chicago over the past year. He’s a total pro and a great guy. We’re very lucky to have him.”

Noland, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, spent 12 years in New York working for the three national magazines before he became a Chicago-based freelance writer and editorial consultant in 2011. He has continued as a contributing editor to Men’s Journal.

Noland profiled Jahlil Okafor, a senior and basketball phenom at Chicago’s Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, for Chicago’s January issue. He also wrote a cover story on Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy for the June 2013 issue.
