\"Sun-Times<\/a><\/a>A recent Sun-Times business blog post<\/a> acknowledged that bitcoin had been \u201cbattered by news of theft and volatility\u201d lately. But that\u2019s not stopping parent company Wrapports LLC<\/a> from doubling down on the controversial digital currency.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Sun-Times announced it was becoming \u201cthe first major newspaper\u201d to accept bitcoin as payment. Customers in the Chicago area can now use bitcoin to pay for the subscriptions at bitcoin.suntimes.com.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"ST<\/a>\u201cOur goal is to keep the Sun-Times current and evolving with changing technology,\u201d Jim Kirk, publisher and editor-in-chief, said in a statement. \u201cAccepting bitcoin payments is one of many ways we are working to stay digitally focused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last February 1, the Sun-Times ran a one-day test <\/a>of bit coins as micro-payments for a voluntary pay wall. Proceeds from the experiment benefitted Taproot Foundation, a San Francisco-based nonprofit.<\/p>\n

Josh Metnick, chief technology officer for Wrapports, told Business Insider<\/a> that bitcoin payments may be expanded to other products by the company.<\/p>\n
