But that\u2019s not stopping parent company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrapports.com\" target=\"_blank\">Wrapports LLC<\/a> from doubling down on the controversial digital currency.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Sun-Times announced it was becoming \u201cthe first major newspaper\u201d to accept bitcoin as payment. Customers in the Chicago area can now use bitcoin to pay for the subscriptions at <a href=\"https:\/\/btc.suntimes.com\" target=\"_blank\">bitcoin.suntimes.com.<!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ST-bitcoin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2921\" alt=\"ST bitcoin\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ST-bitcoin-297x300.jpg\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u201cOur goal is to keep the Sun-Times current and evolving with changing technology,\u201d Jim Kirk, publisher and editor-in-chief, said in a statement. \u201cAccepting bitcoin payments is one of many ways we are working to stay digitally focused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last February 1, the Sun-Times ran a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertfeder.com\/2014\/01\/14\/sun-times-to-put-bitcoins-on-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\">one-day test <\/a>of bit coins as micro-payments for a voluntary pay wall. Proceeds from the experiment benefitted Taproot Foundation, a San Francisco-based nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Metnick, chief technology officer for Wrapports, told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-chicago-sun-times-will-now-take-bitcoin-payments-2014-4\" target=\"_blank\">Business Insider<\/a> that bitcoin payments may be expanded to other products by the company.<\/p>\n<p>\"The implications of this extend beyond just ability to process subscriptions \u2014 it is the furthering of our BTC processing capabilities such that we can extend it into other content and media products down the line,\" Metnick was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent Sun-Times business blog post acknowledged that bitcoin had been \u201cbattered by news of theft and volatility\u201d lately.
