{"id":2292,"date":"2014-02-10T21:00:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T03:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertfeder.com\/?p=2292"},"modified":"2014-02-10T21:04:47","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T03:04:47","slug":"suntimes-com-adds-abc-7-weather-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2014\/02\/10\/suntimes-com-adds-abc-7-weather-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun-Times adds ABC 7 weather updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ABC-7-weather.png\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robertfeder.dailyherald.com\/2014\/02\/10\/suntimes-com-adds-abc-7-weather-updates\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2293\" alt=\"ABC 7 weather\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ABC-7-weather.png\" width=\"704\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><\/a>Meteorologists from <a href=\"http:\/\/abclocal.go.com\/wls\/index\" target=\"_blank\">WLS-Channel 7<\/a> will deliver weather reports on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sun-Times\u2019 website<\/a> as part of a new marketing agreement between the ABC-owned station and the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Starting this week, ABC 7\u2019s Tracy Butler, Mike Caplan and Phil Schwarz will record video forecasts three times a day on weekdays and twice daily on weekends for streaming on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">suntimes.com.<!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The marketing deal, renewable annually, also involves a 10-second promotional spot for the Sun-Times during a commercial break in the station\u2019s top-rated 10 p.m. newscast and a quarter-page ad for ABC 7 each day in the print edition of the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have been looking for a way to elevate our weather content at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"> suntimes.com<\/a> and WLS came forward with a pretty compelling opportunity,\u201d said Jim Kirk, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Sun-Times. \u201cWe are excited about this new relationship and believe that the partnership will help both news brands.\" John Idler, president and general manager of ABC 7, was not available for comment Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sun-Times-ad.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2294\" alt=\"Sun-Times ad\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sun-Times-ad-287x300.png\" width=\"287\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The ABC 7 arrangement signals an end to the longstanding marketing relationship between NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5 and the Sun-Times. In exchange for promoting headlines from the next day\u2019s paper on NBC 5\u2019s 10 p.m. newscast, the Sun-Times had been running a quarter-page ad and a box for weatherman Brant Miller.<\/p>\n<p>In related marketing news, the Sun-Times just launched its first external advertising campaign in years. As part of a trade deal with the CTA, ads for the paper (such as those to the right and below) just began turning up on Red and Blue Line trains and several bus routes.<\/p>\n<p>The ads, designed in house and using real headlines from the paper, focus on news, sports, features and columnists.
