Hoy

Another tronc newspaper in Chicago is reducing its frequency in print.

This time it’s Hoy, the Spanish-language paper that began as a daily and later shrank to three days a week. As of this week, it will appear in print only once a week — on Fridays. The companion publication Fin de Semana, which covers entertainment, shopping and fashion, will continue on weekends.

Launched in 2003, Hoy long claimed to be the largest Spanish-language daily newspaper in Chicago. Current circulation figures were not available.

The reduction follows a similar move by tronc earlier this year when RedEye, the free daily tabloid for young adult commuters, downsized into a weekly dining and entertainment guide distributed on Thursdays.

Both Hoy and RedEye are published by Chicago Tribune Media Group, a unit of Chicago Tribune parent company tronc.

A spokeswoman for Chicago Tribune Media Group said the company remains committed to Hoy in its print and digital forms. By “streamlining” distribution, Chicago's Hoy will be on the same schedule as its counterpart in Los Angeles. She cited “significant growth” in online views of Hoy, saying the company plans to focus on keeping the momentum going in its digital transition.

No jobs were eliminated by the change, according to the spokeswoman.

The former Tribune Co. sold the New York edition of Hoy in 2007 to ImpreMedia, its biggest competitor. Last year tronc rebranded The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Spanish-language Enlace as Hoy San Diego.

Hoy also publishes titles in Philadelphia and Central and South Florida.
