Throughout the month of February, Chicago\u2019s classical music station will be going to the movies \u2014 musically speaking \u2014 with Chicago Tribune<\/a> film critic Michael Phillips.<\/p>\n

Leading up to the 88th annual Academy Awards on February 28, WFMT FM 98.7<\/a> will air a daily feature on great music from the movies, hosted by Phillips, who will share his favorite compositions written for films from the 1930s through the present.<\/p>\n

Starting Monday, \u201cThe Film Score\u201d will air at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays on the Window to the World Communications classical\/fine arts station. It\u2019s part of WFMT\u2019s monthlong celebration exploring \u201cthe relationship between music and the silver screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the Oscars coming up, it\u2019s the right time to dive into eight decades\u2019 worth of award-winning movie music,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cA lot of it will be familiar. But a lot of it won\u2019t. We\u2019ve come up with a pretty wild mixture that runs from Bernard Herrmann to Ennio Morricone to \u2018The Social Network.\u2019 Plus my favorite film theme of all time. That one\u2019s a secret \u2014 at least until late February.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series will culminate in an \u201caudio film festival\u201d \u2014 a marathon of music composed for, inspired by, and featured in movies \u2014 to air February 27 and 28, according to David Polk, program director of WFMT.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted to welcome Michael to our broadcast booth,\u201d Polk said. \u201cHe is passionate about film music, and I know that we\u2019ll all be learning a lot from him in the lead-up to the 2016 Academy Awards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phillips joined the Tribune as theatre critic in 2002 and was named film critic in 2006. A frequent contributor to Turner Classic Movies, he co-hosted the final season of the nationally syndicated movie-review show \u201cAt the Movies\u201d with A.O. Scott of the New York Times.
